Bridges Open Arts Networking Event

Trinity Community Arts will be hosting an event for artists of all media to meet like minded people for food, drink and sharing of ideas. Trinity is keen to support and nurture collaborative practice and are promoting this event as a test for the launch of a framework for artists to exchange ideas, skills and opportunities. This is also an opportunity for artists to get information about participating in the upcoming Bridges project, running throughout 2012 into 2013.

The event will take place on. It will start with a brief talk from an Arts Council England representative on tips for getting funding in the current financial climate.

The morning will consist of a task based ‘speed dating’ event where artists will work with others on a series of creative tasks to create weird and wonderful ideas for arts projects based on provided stimuli. This is designed to be a fun rapid-fire activity where the big crazy ideas will be welcomed alongside the small and fragile. It will give participants a sense of who else is out there and what they do.

There will be a lunch break, with food and drink provided, followed by an afternoon session where participants will feed back their fantasy projects and listen to others’. This will be an informal session to exchange ideas, feedback on work that interests you and discuss possible collaborations. It will also feature a chat about the Bridges project, what it is and how to apply.

There are 40 places available which are being offered on a first come first served basis. If you are interested in booking a space or finding out more information please email bridges@3ca.org.uk or call 0117 935 2100 and ask for Edson or Nick.

SETH LAKEMAN

Folk-inspired, multi-award winning singer/songwriter, Seth Lakeman, undertaking a 14 date tour of the UK followed by the nationwide release of his latest album ‘Tales From the Barrel House’ to meet demand after the original limited edition sold out before Christmas.

Recording one of the tracks for his new album down a disused West Country copper mine, singer and virtuoso fiddler, Seth Lakeman, could literally not have dug deeper into his roots for ‘Tales from the Barrel House’ his 6th album. Not only did he write the entire album, he also plays all the instruments and produced and mixed it too.

Seth says he has enjoyed this solo recording project like few others. It marks a return to the parred down sounds reminiscent of ‘Kitty Jay’, the Mercury Prize nominated album which first shot him into the public eye.

In keeping with this independent spirit, ‘Tales from the Barrel House’ was initially released as a limited run in November 2011 and was made available to fans exclusively via Seth's own website www.sethlakeman.co.uk. However, on the first day of sale, the album proved so popular that the website crashed and by Christmas, the cd had completely sold out. Many fans ended up missing out on the original release and so to meet demand ‘Tales from the Barrel House’ is now set for national release on 02 April.

Seth's reputation as a recording artist is matched by the regard in which he's held as a live performer. His foot-stomping, charismatic and energetic shows have taken him around the globe. At the invitation of the organisers, Seth will be performing at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards on the 08 February in Salford and he then returns to the area on 23rd February to kick off a 14 date tour starting in Manchester. The tour includes an extra special collaboration with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Plymouth Pavilions* on 3rd March 2012.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

New date!

2011 kicked off with the band making a splash with their raucous cover of Ram Jam's 'Black Betty' in Volkswagen's Super Bowl XLV ad.
‘A+E’

New tour to accompany eighth solo album from one of Britain’s most gifted musicians.

Accompanying tour features locally nominated bands chosen by Coxon.

Graham Coxon returns to Parlophone for his new album titled A+E, which will be released on 2nd April. A+E is Coxon’s first release since the acclaimed, acoustic-driven The Spinning Top.

Aptly named not only for the sense of scratchy, frantic urgency that suffuses its 10 songs, A+E finds Graham continuing with his singular vision as a truly eclectic artist. Playing all the instruments and improvising in the studio, Coxon found himself preoccupied with lyrical themes around the effects of weekend hedonism in modern Britain, on which A+E shines an outsider’s light, albeit with a mordant, sharp wit.

Produced by Ben Hillier, A+E features Coxon’s distinctive, visceral garage-punk-pop and is inspired by the experimental genres of Krautrock and the black & white, post-punk era – bringing to mind artists such as Neu! (‘City Hall’), Can and Kraftwerk (‘What’ll It Take’), as well as Peter Hamill, Joy Division (‘Knife In The Cast’) and Monochrome Set - with hypnotic, driving grooves (‘The Truth’). This may be the closet Graham has ever come to making, in a skewed sense of the word, ‘dance’ music.

Coxon describes the album as, “Improvisations, experiments in beats, rhythms. A chance to uninhibitedly make some sort of perversely sad, danceable and funny and despondent songs.” Adding “I didn’t want to get caught up in my usual struggle with trying to make things sound really posh. I didn’t want lovely 60s-sounding drums and valves.”

In keeping with the album’s themes, Graham will curate the bill on a special tour around the UK in April, where he’ll invite his fans to nominate local bands to support him – he will then select his favourite for each venue (please go to www.nme.com / www.grahamcoxon.co.uk for further information).

Trembling Bells

Based in Glasgow, Trembling Bells are a group of 21stcentury troubadours who know their history, joyously attempting to synthesise traditional folk forms with the bathetic romanticism of country music, the deceptive complexity of medieval music and the swagger of classic Rock. Medieval ballads, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are the guiding lights in a music that embraces British folk-rock, American roots and electric psychedelia. The band are at ease with such an open set of influences, effortlessly combining and personalising these superficially disparate musical forms, generating a sound that is saturated in the myths and mysteries of their native terrain but also startlingly original.

Trembling Bells have enjoyed much success since their inception in 2008. The band have gained favour with such musical titans as Joe Boyd, Paul Weller, The Unthanksand Mike Heron (Incredible String Band)as well as unanimous critical acclaim for their three albums, Carbethand Abandoned Love, The Constant Pageant(all on Honest Jons records). They featured heavily in the Wire cover story alongsideAlasdair Robertsdocumenting the emerging adventurous folk scene in Scotland (Caledonia Dreaming, March 2010), while also being mentioned in Rob Young'sbook, Electric Eden.

"Trembling Bells are my kind of band." Joe Boyd (Legendary producer of Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, John Martyn etc)

“Brilliant… concise, deeply romantic, totally original” - Mojo

“Freewheeling and delightfully quirky” - The Guardian

“The group do cast their net wider than British folk. The pounding punk-prog number Otley Rock Oracle, channelling Mountain's Nantucket Sleighride, belongs by virtue of its hallucinatory folkloric narrative. Cold Heart Of Mine's blues harp connects Americana with its European roots and Hastings' raga like licks look East. In the 21st century nothing can exist in splendid isolation. The Constant Pageant offers a poetic incantation of British identity far brighter than Michael Gove's proposed GCSE history syllabus.” - Stewart Lee

www.myspace.com/tremblingbells
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Trembling-Bells/256466514334
http://www.honestjons.com/label.php?pid=36066&LabelID=14815&g=1

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

The singer/song writer and actor Will Oldham is best known for his songs written and performed as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. He has released over 20 albums and numerous other music formats, predominantly on Drag City and Domino records. He is a popular and cult figure who, through his mix of honesty and enigma, has created a canon of work that is regarded very highly throughout the world. He cleverly twists American (and other) folk/roots heritage into new shapes and forms, all presented via his uncompromising indie ethics. His songs and sound can be sweet and open-hearted or oddly detached and cracked. He has an ability to sound ancient and modern, poetic and carefree.

He has worked numerous musicians including his brothers as well as David Pajo (Papa M), Bjork, Sean O'Haganand Matt Sweeneyof Chavez and Zwan, Faun Fables' Dawn McCarthy, Jim O'Rourkeand the Dirty Three's Jim White. He picks his collaborations and counterpoints extremely well.

Defining career releases include Ease Down The Road,Viva Last Blues,Lie Down In The Lightand his 1993 debut There Is No-One What Will Take Care Of You.

The Independent newspaper described him as“the underground artist most likely to work his way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” The New Yorker said“Although he has never signed with a major label, and has never risen higher than No. 194 on Billboard’s album chart, his concerts sell out all over the world. If he remains a spectral figure, that is no coincidence. In an online tour diary from a few years ago, he wrote, “It is more rewarding to be complicit with scarcity than excess.”

http://www.bonnieprincebilly.com

http://www.dragcity.com/artists/will-oldham
